TKT Teaching Knowledge Test Unit 4: Functions

To take up checking this unit, it is essential to know something about functions. Function is the reason and purpose to speak or produce the foreign language more appropriately depending on the context employed. These situations can be applied for apologizing, clarifying, inviting, etc. These contexts are some examples of functions which are used in real situations with the foreign language.

Primarily, we learned from this unit about how to use the functions in a more real situation because language is not only speaking. Given that, a function is how we can use our words, sentences and intonation that we can convey according to our thoughts, feelings, emotions and how these can be applied into a context. For that reason, the exponent is the person that express an idea using verbal and non-verbal communication. However, we understood that to apply a function appropriately is common to use this based on levels of formality according to formal (social) and informal (casual) language. A clear example of formal language is an interview. On the other hand, a clear example of informal language is a conversation between friends. In this part, it is useful to use colloquial language according to the appropriacy.

On the whole, in teaching, we will be able to use most of the time functions because students need to identify how the language can be used formally or informally according to the context employed for the benefit to the students to get in touch with English and cover their necessity of becoming good communicators of the foreign language.
